BAQ Meet-up: Creating an Air Quality Flag Program for Schools (Workshop) Globally, children’s environmental health protection is an emerging priority for nations, communities and families. The World Health Organization estimates that, in 2012, about 1.7 million children under age five died due to environmental causes, with air pollution being a major factor. This session will highlight a US EPA program, since extended to many countries, that uses an Air Quality Index (AQI) to increase public awareness about outdoor air quality. The program uses brightly colored flags as a simple and intuitive means of informing communities about daily air quality, and provides advice to minimize exposure when air quality is poor. We focus on Flag Programs at schools to help protect children, who are especially vulnerable to air pollution due to their high activity level and developing lungs.Pre-registered participants will be offered flags and an instructional kit to take back to their organizations.
